Chiropractic...

...so often the answer

Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.  There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment.

About Chiropractic

Chiropractic began in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer, a Canadian-born teacher and healer. Dr Palmer was studying the cause and effect of disease. In Palmer’s shared offices was a janitorial service, owned by Harvey Lillard who had been deaf for 17 years. Palmer asked how he had become deaf. Lillard replied that one day, when he had strained his back, he heard something “pop” in his back.  For over 17 years Mr. Lillard complained of hearing problems. Palmer examined Lillard’s back and found a spinal vertebrae out of position. Reasoning this to be the cause of Lillard’s deafness, Palmer pushed the vertebrae back into place. As he expected, Lillard’s hearing improved. Palmer theorized that decreased nerve flow may be the cause of disease and that misplaced spinal vertebrae may cause pressure on the nerves. He reasoned, if the spinal column were correctly positioned, the body would be healthy.

Dr. Palmer’s son, Bartlett Joshua Palmer, carried on his father’s philosophy and in 1910 introduced the use of x-rays to show spinal problems.  The science of chiropractic expanded rapidly in the USA following World War II and today there are over 25 chiropractic institutions worldwide with over 10,000 enrolled students.

Chiropractic is now the third largest health care profession in the world, behind medicine and dentistry.  Acceptance among the health care professions has resulted from advanced diagnostic procedures, scientific research, sophisticated equipment, and outstanding results. One of Dr. Palmer’s Patients, a minister, took the greek word for ‘Hand’ (cheiros) and ‘done by’ (procktos) and put them together to spell chiropractic, meaning ‘done by hand’.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can chiropractic help with?

The most common conditions that are relieved include low back pain and neck pain, with or without radiating pain into the arms and legs. However, because chiropractic treatment is about restoring health and not about treating symptoms, many other conditions can be helped – sometimes even those that you have been told to live with or always have to take medication for! One third of the world suffers with headaches.  Many of these originate from dysfunction in the spine creating excessive muscle tension and referred pain into the head.  Even migraines, which have not responded to other methods of treatment, can improve with chiropractic care.

What happens on my first visit?

During the first consultation a full case history will be taken.  As well as asking details about your principal problem the chiropractor will ask questions about your general health and previous medical problems.  You will then be examined to determine the cause of the problem, not just the origin of the symptoms.  If appropriate you may need to have x-rays taken before your case can be fully assessed. At this time the chiropractor will explain what they have discovered during the examination, the significance of this, whether any treatment is appropriate and if so, the form this treatment will take. At all times it is important to us that you remember that it is your body we are dealing with and if you have any questions we encourage you to ask.

How long will it take to get better?

The treatment program is always tailored to the individual and the time taken to get you well depends on factors such as the length of time you have had a problem and your general lifestyle.  Short-lived problems often see an improvement in just a few visits, other more chronic conditions may take longer and progress made more slowly.  In all cases chiropractic care involves a course of treatment.

How can I help myself?

This is a question that is often asked and the answer is always YES!  The only person who is responsible for your health is you and how well you feel is ultimately up to you.  Diet, exercise and other lifestyle issues are all things that we discuss with you; helping you to feel as good as you possibly can, often better than you’ve felt in years. Following a course of treatment we recommend that you choose to have a regular check-up to ensure that your body is working at its optimal level.  Often there are things in your life that put additional stresses on your body such as pregnancy and poor ergonomics at work.  Rather than waiting for these to cause further problems, chiropractic can help to keep your body working in these situations.  How long you benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

What about my G.P.?

Most patients consult a chiropractor directly, usually after a personal recommendation.  However GP’s are allowed by the General Medical Council to refer patients to Chiropractors provided they maintain responsibility for the patient and are sure that they refer to a recognised chiropractor. In recent years GP’s have increasingly been referring patients for chiropractic treatment.  Even so, many GP’s are not aware of the GMC guidelines and others remain poorly informed about chiropractic.  Difficulties in the past may have been causes because chiropractic developed outside the medical profession.  However, nowadays chiropractors see themselves as an essential complement to existing medical services.  There is no doubt a close working relationship between chiropractors and medical practitioners is in the interests of the patient.
